Zuzana B. Friberg OD, FAAO
Dr. Friberg graduated from UCLA with B.S. in Physiological Science. After receiving her Doctorate in Optometry from Southern California College of Optometry with Cum Laude and Honors, Dr. Friberg completed an additional year of post-doctoral residency in Salt Lake City, Utah. The mixed clinical environment of her residency at the Salt Lake VA and University of Utah Moran Eye Center allowed her to evaluate, manage and treat various eye diseases and fit specialty medical contact lenses. During the clinical rotations prior to her residency, she rotated through the Tucson VA Hospital and Blind Rehabilitation Center and the Indian Health Service Hospital on the Hopi reservation in AZ. She also worked at the Cedar Sinai Medical Group in Beverly Hills working side by side in a co-management ophthalmology practice.
As a proud Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, Dr. Friberg is dedicated to the highest standard of optometric practice, and desires to provide the most attentive, yet friendly and comprehensive care to her patients. Her personalized service is reflected in calling patients to follow up on their treatment, and hand writing all referral thank you notes.
Native to a small EU country in the heart of Europe - Slovakia, Dr. Friberg grew up playing piano duets with her sister, dancing in various folklore ensembles and spending summers in her family's cottage in the Low Tatras. She and her husband, an aerospace engineer, moved to Portland from California because they love the urban feel and accessibility to everything Portland has to offer. They enjoy meeting new people in their neighborhood, walking through Portland's many eclectic neighborhoods, and hiking in the Pacific NW. Both also like photography, visiting galleries, skiing, biking, and of course, spending time with each other!
**Dr. Friberg is currently on her maternity leave until further notice. Drs. Thomas Chewerda and Nathan Edwards will be covering the office.**

Thomas A. Chewerda OD
Dr. Chewerda received his B.S. in Environmental Science and his Doctorate of Optometry from Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR. His diverse optometric rotations allowed him to practice in a large family practice clinic in Alaska and a specialty contact lens practice in Ohio. Dr. Chewerda also rotated through the Portland VA, where he had the privilege of providing eye care to the veterans of Oregon and southwest Washington. He has also served on a team that provides eye care in rural Guatemala and volunteers at the free clinic of southwest Washington.
Dr. Chewerda is known for providing friendly, personalized and compassionate eye care to patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly. He excels in comprehensive eye care including fitting contact lenses, management of ocular disease and pediatric eye exams.
Dr. Chewerda was born and raised in North Dakota, but now considers Portland and the Pacific Northwest his home. When home, he enjoys spending time with his wife, friends and family. In his time off, Dr. Chewerda can be found spending his free time outdoors - depending on the season, you can find him snowboarding, biking, backpacking, kayaking, fishing, or disc golfing. He is also an avid tennis player and enjoys bonsai.

Julie A. Demaree OD
Dr. Demaree graduated with high honors in 1983 from Pacific University College of Optometry. Specialized training from the New York College of Optometry and experience as a teacher has made Dr. Demaree very aware of how subtle vision problems can affect comfort while reading, or doing computer work.
Dr. Demaree demands caring competence from both herself and her staff in every patient interaction and she strives to exceed patient expectations in the thoroughness of her examination and recommendations. Dr. Demaree has maintained the personal, friendly manner typical of the small town in Montana where she grew up. She enjoys talking to patients as neighbors and friends.
Although you might not see Dr. Demaree at Uptown EyeCare very often, you might spot her enjoying life sailing and waterskiing on the Columbia River with her husband and two kids!

Katie Hammel
Katie is our office manager and main optician. Her precise attention to detail, cheerful personality and a great sense of humor along with an outstanding commitment to patient care, make Katie an integral part of the Uptown EyeCare team. With over seven years of experience in the optical industry, Katie is very knowledgeable about eyewear selection and optical products, and can also answer all your insurance questions.
Katie grew up in Newport, Washington and moved to the Portland area nine years ago. Like many Pacific North Westerners, she and her boyfriend like the outdoors and enjoy walking their dogs along the Willamette. They also like to work on their house and garden in their free time. To this day, Katie still loves the Portland rain and as a true purest, doesn't believe in umbrellas.

Torrey Dally
Torrey is our front desk receptionist and second optician. You will find Torrey's energetic customer care exceptional, and her enthusiasm for the job truly contagious! Torrey grew up in Santa Ana, California and moved to Portland when she was ten years old. She is a proud English degree graduate from Portland State University, and in her free time likes to read books, try out new restaurants around town, and get together with her family and friends.
The saying "It's a small world" rings very true for Torrey. Her dad is the local postman for Uptown EyeCare, and told her she should really look into working there - who knew more than two years have already flown by with happy Torrey working at the front desk!
